Trial of the Deconites

Fort Akton, The Bunker, Klos 13th, 350AC, new moon

(FYI, the next adventure starts after this trial)  The weather has warmed a bit over the last week.  Highs in the 40s have started to melt the snow, so the ground is now covered by a thin crust.  The snow has melted completely over any previously used trails, rock or ancient pavement.  Day brings cold wet mud, night brings frozen ground.

Zeebo is given access to the seven prisoners, the ex-enforcers that were unflinchingly loyal to The Deacon.  They surrendered at the Battle of Conquered when defeat was inevitable.  Talking to them, it is obvious that they think The Deacon is a supernatural being (his death apparently doesn’t lessen his influence, they believe his spirit is as powerful as ever).  Serving him is the only way in life.  They followed his orders to kidnap badlanders and bring them back to be exposed to the glow.  They also killed any resistance to the Deacon, although after a rash of killings, no one voiced any opposition.  They are not hiding any of their actions, nor are they apologetic.  They believe they have followed the will of a higher power.

The day of the trial arrives.  Numerous citizens, including the Presidents, the witnesses (Ragnor and Arvak perhaps among them, Phallon can avoid the scene altogether if he wishes), and a lot of soldiers, crowd into the Main Hall of the bunker.  Everyone listens to what unfolds in the nearby Chamber of the Tribunal.  Within the chamber, the three judges sit behind their high desks, looking down at the laa’yers, and the accused, who are brought in by Akton soldiers.  Each prisoner is still wearing ancient orange coveralls with a black armband.  Their wrists and ankles are shackled.

Zeebo represents the accused.  The accusing laa’yer was difficult to establish, as many of those worthy were actually at the battle of Conquered, or closely tied to the events.  Eventually, a worthy candidate was found:  the sister of the queen of the Lex, Tiana.  In her mid-30’s, weathered and scarred, she arrives wearing a pink hopper fur cloak, then opens it to reveal leather armor and sandles, decorative feathered bracelets, and wears a rapier on her belt.  She speaks slowly, deliberately, and questions everyone tenaciously.

The summary of the trial is as follows:  Tiana lays out the agenda of The Deacon, and how his enforcers murdered any opposition within Conquered.  The enforcers were then sent out into the badlands to kidnap any they found.  These victims were then regularly exposed to the glow until they died, or mutated and were given a chance to join Conquered (the alternative = death).  With this framework in place, Tiana then calls on various witnesses showing specific events: the norfo fishermen being abducted and the little girl being killed by a stun baton.  Lex tribeswomen being attacked by enforcers, with some of them being dragged off.  Conquered citizens detailing individual enforcers brutality against them or outside badlanders.  Four of the enforcers present are pointed out by witnesses as being directly involved in these events.  The other three are not fingered with specific crimes, although they were present with the groups (alpha and beta squads) that did.

Zeebo, how are you going to frame your defense?  Arvak and Ragnor, your influence and experience will allow you to make some comments in the trail (likely called in as witnesses, or perhaps some behind the scenes persuasion).  Would you like to add anything?

Post Turn 3

Conquered, Klos 5th-10th, 350 AC, winter, moon waning from gibbous to crescent.

In the days after the quarantine, the Programmers are temporarily (they hope) settled.  Most of them are kept at Conquered, since they are used to living in small enclosed rooms.  Mensa (who is working with President Ramil to reclaim Middex), Zelda, and a handful of others are brought back to Akton.  The Presidents interview the Programmers, seek your input, and deliberate on their future.  Gaal Lont suggests building a few new houses at Akton, to house them in case Middex is not quickly saved.  Ramil concludes that many of the Programmers are unskilled beyond their computers, and are useless and paranoid outside of Middex.  He suggests that having them go through military training might be the sudden shock they need to mold them into useful citizens.

The trial of the deconite enforcers is set to begin within the week.  Arvak and Ragnor will be needed as witnesses.  The Tribunal is having a hard time finding anyone willing or qualified to represent the accused.  Reluctantly, they ask Zeebo (who offered his services in pre-turn 2) if he would like the job.

Zeebo:  so far, you are swimming in smuggy joy about Zelda, and everyone (except Zelda who is almost as perfect as you) seems more nauseated than usual around you.  Zelda has traveled to Akton, and is staying in the Bunker.  When not working on the Middex problem or at R&D, she does hang around your apartment (unless you lock her out!)  With further first aid and time, you heal up to 100 hp.

Arvak:  you go to Sanctuary and tell tales of your recent exploits.  Saving children from mutant monsters, despite grevious injury and biogenic infection, gets you big time brownie points with the healers and champions.  And you score a few more whole-body applications of Malkar cream.  You are back up to 124 hp.  You look to get a new cape.  The nice thing is that the Champion’s tailor has a number of oversized cloaks, and some in red.  Anywhere else, you would have to get it custom made.  She will sell it to you for 35 domars.

Phallon:  Silas, the secretary of trade, wants a report on any potential artifacts, salvage, or other resources from your past few days.  You are encouraged to mention anything, even if “owned, unattainable, or cursed”, since situations may change in the future, and the company can lobby with the government for future claims, etc…  You are fully healed up to 131 hp.

Ragnor:  As the moon phase wanes, your agitation fades away, leading to calm thoughts and pondering.  President Ramil asks you your opinion on military training for the Programmers, since you helped train a bunch of random misfit badlanders last year, into the current core of the Akton Army.  Also, it will be a new moon for the deconite enforcer trial.  You will be a witness at your most diplomatic and thoughtful time.  Would it serve the nation best for the previous murderous thugs to be executed, or is there another way?  (See akton history, or pre-turns for past info)  You heal up to 100 hp.

What would you like to do this week?

Post Turn 2

Conquered, Klos 4th-5th, 350 AC, winter, moon gibbous.

After the debriefing, your group is brought over to the conquered storage (Cell Block C-2) for your 24 hour quarrantine.  Each cell is made of stone, with the front wall being made up of metal bars with a door.  Each contains a simple bunkbed, a desk with chair, an ancient toilet (which you are told NOT to use) and a more recent chamber-pot.  During the day, the room would be lit by transleucent windows in the ceiling.  Presently (night-time) the ancient glow panels are dark, but the cell block is lit by glowplants (potted flowers that give off a silvery glow, they make Ragnor restless as they remind him of strong moonlight).  webconquered22

The Healer, Em Zury (a true woman in her late 30’s), and two akton soldiers (Marden the true man and Aten the allzwellian) are posted in the room, outside the cells.  The Programmers have all been locked up, about 2 people per cell.  You are brought to the lower right quarter of the room, where 5 empty cells are waiting.  Em Zury wears a leather trench coat, healer’s bag with shoulder strap, and high leather boots over her white healer’s clothing.  Her light grey eyes are striking on her weathered face.  She looks at your group, nods at Arvak (“Champion“), and says, “I’d recommend you each take a single cell.  That way if one of you is infected and turns, the others are safe.  She whispers, “These people (gestures at the Programmers) are acting very panicky.  They seem to do better in groups, so I had them buddy up.  Oh, you must be Doctor Zeebo.  Hmmm, doctor was an ancient title for Healers.  Or scholars of any field.  What does your title mean?  Well, you’ve been “assigned” to the corner cell, this way…

What are your actions for the quarrantine (healing to come at the end of the turn)?  Do you buddy up or take single cells?  Zeebo, see your private turn…

Post Turn 1

Conquered, Klos 4th, 350 AC, evening, gibbous moon

Quest completed!  The surviving Programmers, cold and hungry, are brought back to the safety of Conquered!  They are let inside, for warmth, food, and access to the Healer.  Taking Phallon’s suggestion, the group is isolated (technically locked in) in one of the ancient prison blocks (cell block C2) to make sure no one is infected (24 hour quarrantine should suffice, based on the info you gathered this adventure).
